Yes, the elect must be diligent
Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
—2 Peter 1:10-11
Peter affirmed that salvation is based on God’s election from eternity past, and His call results in the elect trusting in His Son, Jesus Christ. God’s election and call are not merely to be saved from God’s wrath in the next life, but also from sin in this life.
Please note two beneficial results of being diligent in the Christian life that Peter points out in this passage:
First, if we do these things we will never stumble. Anyone who has walked with Christ for any length of time has seen many who professed Christ, and maybe even walked with Him for a time, stumble and ultimately fall away. These didn’t cease to be Christians. They never were Christians according to 1 John 2:19. Falling away invalidates a person’s profession of faith, and since it happens to many, we ought to be all the more diligent to make our calling and election sure and so avoid stumbling and falling away.
Second, if we do these things… entrance will be supplied… abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Not only will diligence to follow hard after Christ keep us from stumbling, we are promised an eternal home in Heaven. And it will not be a home we will enjoy sparingly, but abundantly.
Therefore, my beloved, no matter how we may struggle in our walk with Christ, let us be even more diligent to make our calling and election sure!
